Get To Know Wednesdays: Sonkin

Phew, it’s been an incredible past week. The show in Philadelphia with A Made Up Sound, Flufftronix and the Inciting crew was one to remember. I’ll be on the look out for some photos from the event. I also released a remix of Mr. Mitch’s “Skittles” as a FREE download. You can pick it up on my soundcloud or at the bottom of this post.

It’s Wednesday and you know what that means…we’re back with Get To Know Wednesdays! This Wednesday we have New York via Philly via LA via Florida bass weight champion Sonkin! I first met Sonkin seeing Joe Nice spin at a small, Chinatown dive bar in Philly back in 2008. Since then we’ve hung out, made music, DJed together and watched classic WWE wrestling clips on YouTube. Here’s the man himself!

Please introduce yourself!

I’m Leon Sonkin. I was born in Tampa, Florida and have moved around a bit since the age of 17. I currently live in Brooklyn, but recently lived in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. I currently work for and rep Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey records along with Starkey, Dev79, BD1982, El Carnicero, and Siyoung.

What was your first show?

10/31/07 at Dragonfly in Harrisburg, PA.

What was your best show?

I don’t remember the exact date, but one of my favorite gigs was the late night slot I played at the Muddy River festival 2 years ago. That’s tied with a show I played in Denver a few months ago at Cervantes’. Giant stage/light show… pretty amazing.

What inspires you recently, and what has always inspired you?

Little things like the weather, my friends, family… they all play a small to moderate role in inspiration. I’m also a big fan of heavy music, primarily metal. It definitely continues to inspire me in certain ways, perhaps more so in the past. I’m also a huge hip hop fan (dirty south) and i love old funk and soul. I pretty much listen to everything… I also really love old Soviet iconography and propaganda art.

What are you currently working on now, and what can people expect from it?

Finishing up my bside for this new single with Rx “Stop Being a Bitch” which should have some heavyweight remixers on it as well… will be coming out soon on Made In Glitch. Also working on a collab with Kendo from Two Fresh, one with Eliot Lipp, track with Cerebral Vortex, and a remix of a Grey Granite tune… and I’d like to make some more music with Rx!

Where can people see you DJ next? Where can people pick up your current releases?

i’ll be playing the disco biscuits after party at touch nightclub in manhattan on the 27th of december… all of my music is available on itunes, junodownload, beatport and all major online distributors.

Anything else you’d like to add? Any shout outs?

look for my new party, the Programme, at Public Assembly in Brooklyn on the 26th of January. Gonna be a smashingly good time!

Thanks Leon!
